The Recruiter Who Starts with the Why

The Recruiter Who Starts with the Why

Philip Pousset knew exactly what he was leaving behind. Seventeen years at Harvey Nash. A team of seven recruiters. A portfolio of 220 consultants. A salary that made the decision harder than it should have been.

He left anyway.

Not out of failure — but out of a quiet, gnawing honesty that eventually became impossible to ignore. One morning he looked at the names on his books and realised he no longer knew what most of those 220 people were actually doing. "It had become about numbers and commissions," he says. "And I just couldn't find the satisfaction in that anymore."

In January 2022, Pousset founded WHY – We Help You, a specialist recruitment and selection agency serving the Kempen, Antwerp, and Flemish Brabant regions of Belgium. No team. No grand scale plan. Just a return to the thing he had always done best: talking to people, understanding what drives them, and making matches that last.

Who: Philip Pousset, Founder of WHY – We Help You, Putte, Belgium — formerly Director of IT Contracting at Harvey Nash Belgium.

What: A specialist recruitment and selection agency covering Kempen, Antwerp, and Flemish Brabant, focused on permanent placements in IT, finance, and insurance for SMEs and mid-sized companies in the region.

  • WHY deliberately limits shortlists to one to three candidates — quality over volume, every time

  • Every assignment starts with a physical company visit; if the culture isn't right, they walk away before taking the role on

  • Post-placement follow-up is standard practice, not an afterthought — Philip stays in contact with every candidate placed over the past four years

  • They talk directly to the CEO or CIO and build a real working relationship

From Director to Solo Founder: A Leap into the Unknown

The image Philip uses to describe leaving Harvey Nash is deliberate and precise: stepping out of a golden cage. He had built real security over 17 years, and choosing to leave it behind meant giving all of that up at once. "When you jump like that, you jump into the unknown — into nothingness," he says. "You go from everything you've built to zero. That is really intense."

Those early years were not without doubt. The Belgian recruitment market became particularly difficult in 2024, and WHY – We Help You felt that pressure alongside everyone else. But Philip stayed focused, adapted where needed, and held firm on what made him different. Four years in, the business is profitable. More importantly, it is his — built in his own image, on his own terms.

What he wanted to recover, above all, was the feeling of genuinely knowing the people he worked with. His first job had been in media — as an editorial staff member and weekend director at Radio 2, working alongside well-known Belgian broadcasters. That experience taught him two things that have shaped everything since: how to talk to people, and how to truly listen. "I always wanted to do something in journalism or in HR," he says. "As it turns out, I did both."

"When you jump into the unknown, you jump into nothingness. You go from everything you've built to zero. That is really intense — but I couldn't do it any other way."

Leveraging Family Business Values

Ann Willemsens came from a completely different world. She grew up inside her family's banking and insurance agency — an Axa-affiliated office in a small Flemish village where, as she puts it, clients didn't come for the brand. They came for her parents. "They came for Paul, Lieve, and Anneke," she says. "That personal connection was everything." After eventually winding down the family business, Ann stepped back to focus on the children. When the youngest started school and she was ready for something new, she began supporting Philip behind the scenes — invoicing, administration, keeping the business organised. Gradually, almost naturally, she was drawn deeper into the recruitment work itself.

Today, they describe their working dynamic with characteristic warmth. "I am the spotter," Ann laughs, "and Philip is the sniper." She handles the initial sourcing and first contact with candidates — laying the groundwork with patience and precision. Philip steps in to build the relationship and guide the process forward. It is a division of labour that feels intuitive, and it works.

What makes it more than just efficient is the complementarity of their expertise. Philip's deep roots are in IT — developers, analysts, project managers, helpdesk profiles. Ann's network lives in banking and insurance, built over years of genuine relationships in that world. "If I call someone in insurance and introduce myself, they ask: who are you?" Philip says. "But when Ann calls, the conversation is completely different. People immediately feel understood. That's the magic of genuine expertise."

Quality Over Volume: How WHY Recruits for SMEs in Kempen and Antwerp

WHY – We Help You's philosophy becomes most vivid when Philip explains what clients should expect in terms of candidate numbers. One, he tells them. Maybe two. Three at most. In an industry that has long equated volume with effort, this tends to raise eyebrows. He doesn't flinch. "If a role is genuinely difficult to fill, there are probably only two or three truly relevant people in the market. Our job is to find them — not to flood your inbox."

Every assignment begins with a physical company visit — not a briefing call, but a presence in the office, absorbing the culture, reading the atmosphere, deciding whether a placement could genuinely work. Philip and Ann observe how people interact, whether there is care for growth, whether someone joining the team would truly thrive. Sometimes, after that visit, they walk away before taking the role on. "I'd rather be honest upfront than place someone in the wrong environment," Pousset says simply. Ann is equally direct about the consequences of getting it wrong: "If you place someone in the wrong company, they'll leave in two months. That doesn't serve the candidate, it doesn't serve the client, and it certainly doesn't serve us."

This honesty extends to the candidate experience too. Both Philip and Ann are candid about how poorly candidates are treated by much of the industry — ignored after submitting CVs, left without feedback, passed between desks in volume-driven offices. WHY – We Help You maintains contact with every person they have placed over the past four years. Some relationships are closer than others — that is natural — but the message is consistent: we are here after the placement, not just before it.

Building a Sustainable Recruitment Agency in Belgium: The WHY Model for Long-Term Growth

The Belgian recruitment market hit a rough patch in 2024, and WHY felt it alongside many others. But the business stayed profitable — and more importantly, it stayed coherent. Philip and Ann have no plans to build a large team. Both have watched agency owners buckle under the weight of payroll pressure and the relentless chase for volume. "We want to grow," Ann says, "but not at the expense of what makes us WHY." Philip is even more direct: "The moment I lose sight of what's happening in every single assignment, I lose the story."

On technology, Philip is pragmatic rather than defensive. He uses AI tools for note-taking and transcription, and sees genuine value in automating the more repetitive parts of the process. WHY – We Help You will continue investing in better ATS systems and smarter workflows. But he draws a firm line at automating the relationship itself. "AI cannot tell you that a candidate won't be happy in a high-pressure sales culture. It cannot read the room during a company visit. It cannot build the trust that makes someone pick up the phone for you." The moment you automate the relationship, he believes, you have lost the point entirely.

What WHY is building instead is quieter and arguably more resilient: a business that grows through genuine referrals, where new clients come through people who know people, and where the most effective marketing is the feedback of a candidate who was treated well and says so. "You don't have to be big to be successful," Ann says, echoing something she watched her parents demonstrate for decades in their village insurance office. "You just have to look people in the eye and do what you said you would."

Philip Pousset began his working life learning to listen — in a radio studio, reading people, asking the right questions. It turns out that was the best possible training for what he does today. In a market drowning in CVs, that might just be the most competitive thing you can be.
