When Science Meets Human-Centric Recruitment
In our conversation with Sophie Scheck, Associate Partner, and Jan Martin Scheck, Managing Partner at People for Success, we explore their unique approach to talent strategy management. This father-daughter duo shares how they combine scientific methodology with a deeply human touch to revolutionize recruitment and talent optimization. What inspired you to enter the staffing and recruitment industry? Was there a specific experience that sparked your passion? Jan Martin Scheck: "The journey of People for Success began in 2016 when I founded the company. We wanted to create something different - not just another recruitment agency, but a boutique advisory firm focused on strategic human resource management. When Sophie joined in 2023, it strengthened our people-centric vision even further. Our mission, 'People make the difference,' isn't just a tagline - it's what drives us every day. We believe in taking a full-circle approach to talent management, using The Predictive Index methodology to ensure we're not just filling positions, but creating lasting matches between people and roles." What's a challenge you've overcome, and how has it shaped you as a leader? Jan: "Throughout my career in various C-level leadership roles within international organizations, I've had the privilege of collaborating with and leading many talented professionals. One significant challenge I've encountered is uniting diverse stakeholders to devise organizational solutions during challenging times, such as mergers. In high-pressure situations, individuals often revert to their default motivational drivers. Understanding my own profile and how it interacts with those I manage and work alongside has been crucial to my success in ensuring that I hire the right people for the right roles at the right time. The science-backed Predictive Index assessments have consistently guided me to identify the most suitable candidates." Sophie Scheck: "When faced with tight deadlines and high-pressure environments, it's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture and how one's actions are perceived by others. Our talent strategy, grounded in The Predictive Index methodology, enables us to develop tailored solutions that empower individuals to recognize their motivational drivers, preferred working styles, and the types of team additions that will enhance existing dynamics. This full-circle approach ensures that your teams remain cohesive and effective, even amidst the demands of a fast-paced work environment." What sets your agency apart from the competition, and how do your clients and candidates benefit from this unique value proposition? Jan: "What truly sets People for Success apart is our comprehensive approach to talent strategy management. We understand that organizations not only want to hire the right people for the right roles at the right times, but they also want to ensure that these individuals are committed to staying long-term. Unfortunately, many organizations face unnecessary turnover, which can be both costly and disruptive. Our recommended recruitment process begins with a thorough job assessment. We recommend that all stakeholders complete The Predictive Index Job Assessment to establish clear job targets. The behavioral and cognitive benchmarks derived from this assessment allow you to thoughtfully consider the requirements of each role and ensure an optimal match. While data is a valuable tool, we recognize that candidates are more than just numbers, and we emphasize this in every interaction. Assessments are integral to your recruitment process, alongside aligning candidates with your company culture and understanding their unique experiences and values. Additionally, insights into behavioral traits and cognitive abilities provide valuable information for effectively onboarding your new talent. Research has demonstrated that a successful, tailored onboarding process can significantly enhance employee retention. By adopting our unique approach, your organization can not only improve your hiring outcomes but also foster a more engaged and stable workforce." What core values guide the culture and decision-making within your agency? Sophie: "At People for Success, we prioritize people as the heart of every organization while guiding our decisions through objective data and thorough analysis. We focus on integrating experience and soft skills, ensuring a human-centered approach in everything we do. By working collaboratively with clients and providing customized solutions, we create an accessible environment that fosters continuous improvement and positive outcomes." How do you ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion are embedded in your recruitment practices? Sophie: "I would like to advocate for including the 'B' for belonging in the DEI acronym, as belonging is essential for the success of diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts. As Verna Myers aptly puts it, 'Diversity is being invited to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.' To go further, 'Belonging is dancing like no one is watching,'- original author unknown. Our licensed assessments and their accompanying reports are designed to be neutral, and we prioritize inclusive language throughout our work. We recognize that DEIB is an ongoing process, and we are committed to helping our clients navigate it effectively. Continuous education is key, and we actively embrace improvement, including for ourselves. For instance, PI uses gender-neutral reports in English and has phased out the term 'blind spots' due to its ableist implications, replacing it with the more inclusive term 'caution areas.'" What strategies do you use to build and maintain long-term relationships with clients? Sophie: "To build and maintain long-term relationships with our clients, we focus on fostering collaborative partnerships that go beyond transactional interactions. We understand that effective talent strategy and successful hiring efforts are not achieved through a one-size-fits-all approach; hence, we prioritize responsiveness and open communication. We not only train our clients in our methodologies but also assist in implementing these strategies throughout their organizations, sharing best practices derived from our extensive experience across various sectors. Our commitment to authenticity ensures that our relationships remain genuine and productive, allowing us to adapt and evolve alongside our clients' needs." What are you most proud of when it comes to your agency's achievements, and what impact do you hope to make in the world through your work? Jan: "What we are most proud of at People for Success is the fact that our achievements are intricately linked to the success of our clients. The trust our clients place in us drives us to grow and improve every day. Witnessing the integration of scientifically backed data in their recruitment processes is particularly rewarding, especially when clients share how insights into people data have positively impacted their organizations. Additionally, working together as a father-daughter team has been a fantastic journey." Sophie: "The freedom to forge my own path and the trust I have received in my role make me truly passionate about what I do. We practice what we preach. Our mission is to ensure that people are at the heart of decision-making processes. We believe that for every business strategy developed, there should be a corresponding people strategy in place. This alignment is our ultimate goal, as it fosters a culture where individuals feel valued and empowered to contribute to the organization's success. Together, everybody wins." What role does technology play in your recruitment processes, and how are you leveraging it to meet the evolving expectations of clients and candidates? Sophie: "Technology plays a crucial role in our recruitment processes, as we offer the Talent Optimization Platform powered by The Predictive Index to our clients. In addition to tailored assessments, this platform seamlessly integrates with a variety of HRIS systems and recruitment tools, enhancing the overall efficiency of talent management. On a human level, we recognize that technological advancements are here to stay, and harnessing them is vital. Gaining insight into cognitive abilities, understanding how individuals adapt to change, and identifying their capacity for learning—all at varying speeds—are essential for shaping effective recruitment processes in the future. By leveraging technology in these ways, we are better positioned to meet the evolving expectations of both clients and candidates." The conversation with Sophie and Jan Martin reveals a refreshing perspective on talent strategy - one where scientific methodology and human understanding work in perfect harmony. Their father-daughter dynamic brings a unique energy to People for Success, combining years of experience with fresh insights. Through their commitment to data-driven decisions and genuine human connections, they're reshaping how organizations approach talent optimization, proving that when science meets empathy, everybody wins.
