Company Description

United Government Security Officers of America (UGSOA) is a national labor union dedicated exclusively to federally contracted security professionals covered under Section 9(b)(3) of the National Labor Relations Act. Founded in 1992 by James Vissar, a working security officer at the Rocky Flats nuclear facility, UGSOA was created to fix two persistent shortcomings in the industry: lack of field-experienced representation and excessive centralized control over locals. From fewer than 100 members operating out of Vissars home, the organization has grown to represent over 12,000 members nationwide, with a headquarters established in 2016 in East Wareham, Massachusetts to support sustainable growth and strong financial stewardship. Built and led by individuals who have walked the same posts and understand the job firsthand, UGSOA negotiates strong collective bargaining agreements, enforces worker protections through grievances and arbitration, and delivers tangible results. In recent years, the union has secured millions of dollars in settlements, back pay, and awards for members; in just the last five years it has recovered over $3 million and reinstated more than 30 officers with full seniority, benefits, and back pay, including more than $650,000 recovered in 2025 alone. UGSOAs member-led model keeps local autonomy at the forefront while leveraging national scale and expertise across DHS, CSO, and NRC contract environments. The union also invests in member education through training seminars and provides access to a UGSOA-sponsored national benefits program, featuring multiple tiers of medical coverage through the Cigna network as well as dental, vision, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, 401(k), and other optional benefits; these offerings are designed for portability to support members through employer or contract transitions. With an unwavering focus on fair pay, safe working conditions, and respect on the job, UGSOA continues to organize new workplaces, strengthen existing contracts, and support members careers and families through practical advocacy, scholarships, and day-to-day representation that produces measurable outcomes.
