Spotlight on Spotlights: Turning Recruitment Competition into Collaboration

Every week, recruitment agencies spend hours screening brilliant candidates who don't fit current client briefs. These "silver medallists" disappear into databases, while companies elsewhere desperately search for exactly this talent. Sound familiar? This frustration costs the industry millions in missed opportunities and wasted effort.

Enter Spotlights - a Belgian platform that's turning this problem into a solution by helping agencies collaborate instead of compete.

  • Company Spotlight: Spotlights

  • Founded: 2023

  • Headquarters: Belgium

  • Active: Belgium, Netherlands (expanding)

  • Focus: Connecting screened candidates with employers through agency collaboration

  • Key Mission: Transform "silver medal" candidates into successful placements

The Problem Every Recruiter Faces

"I saw fantastic candidates lost in databases every single day, despite many companies actively searching for this exact talent," explains Wim Bellemans, founder of Spotlights. "After 13 years in recruitment, this waste of potential became impossible to ignore."

The numbers tell the story: agencies typically place only 5% of the candidates they screen. The rest - highly qualified professionals who simply don't match current client briefs - vanish into databases. Meanwhile, other companies struggle to find these very same profiles.

"It felt like such a waste because we'd already done the hard work as recruiters. We had all the information, and the candidate was ready for new opportunities," Wim continues.

From Frustration to Innovation

Three years ago, Wim left his recruitment job to build a solution. Starting manually - connecting candidates with employers himself - he quickly realised the potential for something bigger.

"At first, I thought Spotlights was just a way to place those silver medallists. But clients showed us it was actually also valuable as a lead generator," Wim recalls. "Agencies could see which companies were viewing their candidates and turn those interactions into new business opportunities."

The platform evolved from simple candidate sharing to a comprehensive ecosystem where agencies track talent visibility and companies search anonymously for pre-screened candidates.

A Fresh Perspective

September 2025 marked a turning point with Glenn De Lange joining as CEO. The former competitive athlete turned business developer brings a structured approach to growth and community building.

"Spotlights has enormous potential, and I want to bring more consistency to how we present ourselves and grow," Glenn explains. "My first task is ensuring everyone understands what we stand for and how they can benefit from joining us."

Glenn's approach includes radical transparency: "We plan to publish our growth numbers weekly. When people see progress and feel part of something bigger, that's when real momentum builds."

Building Trust in a Competitive Market

Getting agencies to share their best candidates isn't easy. Many still view talent as proprietary assets.

"Some agencies think, 'These are our candidates, we don't want to share them,'" Wim observes. "But here's the reality: if you can't help someone and don't share, they'll simply approach your competitors directly. You've lost the candidate and gained nothing."

The platform addresses this by showing agencies exactly which companies view their candidates and providing new business opportunities. "It's not just about placements - it's about generating leads and building relationships," Glenn adds.

Are you struggling with similar challenges? Many agencies report that 95% of their screened candidates never find suitable positions through their current client base. Platforms like Spotlights are changing these statistics.

Technology That Serves People

Spotlights already incorporates AI-powered search and candidate matching. "We don't want talent stuck in outdated ATS systems," Wim explains. "Our technology helps make connections instantly, based not just on CVs but on all the notes, conversations, and insights from the screening process."

The platform anonymises candidate information initially, revealing contact details only when genuine interest is confirmed. This protects candidate privacy while enabling efficient matching.

Why Now?

The recruitment industry faces unprecedented challenges. Skills shortages, remote work complexities, and increased competition for talent are pushing agencies to find new approaches. Traditional methods - cold calling, database hoarding, and territorial behaviour - no longer deliver results.

"The HR world is under enormous pressure," Glenn observes. "Open LinkedIn and you see frustrations everywhere. Everyone's struggling with matches, timelines, and expectations. There's clearly demand for better solutions."

Expansion and Partnership

With strong growth in Belgium and early success in the Netherlands, Spotlights is preparing for broader expansion. "Dutch companies often have a more experimental mindset," Wim notes. "They're willing to try new approaches, which creates opportunities for platforms like ours."

Glenn's growth strategy focuses on building critical mass: "Once we reach 200-300 partners on both sides, we'll hit that tipping point where growth becomes self-sustaining. People will start talking about us, referring to colleagues, and expanding usage internally."

Like Talent Business Partners' commitment to "Proof, Not Promises," Spotlights believes in demonstrating value through transparency and results. "We share the same vision of making recruitment more collaborative," Glenn explains.

"The future belongs to agencies that embrace openness, technology, and genuine partnerships. Those that don't risk being left behind by competitors who do."

The Path Forward

Spotlights represents a new generation of recruitment thinking - one built on collaboration rather than competition, transparency rather than secrecy, and shared success rather than zero-sum games.

As the platform prepares for its next growth phase, the message is clear: recruitment works better when everyone wins. Candidates find opportunities faster, agencies generate more business, and companies access better talent.
